Our Drugs & Alcohol Project is holding free meetings throughout 2011 for people affected by someone else's drug or alcohol usage. The monthly meetings will be on Tuesdays at Scarborough Library, in the Small Room and will offer an opportunity to gain advice, information and to meet others dealing with similar problems. Of most importance they will offer a chance to talk.

Scarborough & Ryedale Carers Resource has recently been successful in gaining funding specifically to work with people who are affected by someone else's substance misuse issues. The Esmee Fairbairn Foundation granted funding to enable Carers Resource to work with individuals who provide care and support to a family member or friend with substance misuse issues across Scarborough, Whitby, Ryedale. Support will be offered in a variety of ways, including;

1:1 support, advocacy, information, and advice.

Group support, on a monthly basis, in partnership with the Cambridge Centre.

'Confident Caring' sessions designed to support carers with day to day issues such as looking after themselves, budgeting, healthy eating, coping with stress, juggling care and work.

Liz Brown, Service Manager says individuals supporting someone with issues related to substance use can feel very isolated. "They are affected by the stigma that is often attached to drug and alcohol misuse and often don’t know where to turn. This new project will provide support and information to help them cope and we look forward to providing this service and making a difference."

Scarborough & Ryedale Carers Resource provides information and advice to anyone caring for a family member or friend on a range of issues including;

Welfare benefits

Education, employment and learning opportunities

Local support services.
